Turquoise Rainbowfish
The turquoise rainbowfish, Melanotaenia lacustris, is a captivating freshwater species native to the lakes and rivers of Papua New Guinea. This vibrant fish is well-known for its striking turquoise-blue coloration, which can range from bright to deep shades depending on the individual and its environment. Males are particularly vivid, showcasing bright blue bodies adorned with iridescent yellow or green accents, especially on their fins and tail.
Typically growing to about 4-5 inches in length, turquoise rainbowfish are social and thrive best in groups of six or more. They prefer spacious aquariums with plenty of open swimming areas and some plants for cover, as they enjoy both swimming freely and exploring their surroundings. Ideal water conditions for this species include temperatures between 75-82°F and a pH range of 6.5-7.5.
As omnivores, turquoise rainbowfish appreciate a varied diet that includes high-quality flakes, pellets, and live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp and bloodworms. Their peaceful demeanor and striking appearance make them a popular choice among aquarists, adding beauty and liveliness to community tanks while contributing to a dynamic and colorful aquatic environment.
