Pigmy Sparkling Gourami
The Sparkling Gourami (Trichopsis pumila) is a charming and small freshwater fish known for its vibrant coloration and unique behavior. Native to the shallow waters of Southeast Asia, particularly in rice paddies and swampy areas, this species typically grows to about 1.5 to 2 inches (3.8 to 5 cm) in length.
Sparkling Gouramis are characterized by their iridescent bodies, which can display shades of blue, green, and silver, often featuring distinctive dark spots and a rounded shape. Males are particularly striking during breeding, as they develop bright colors and elongated fins.
These gouramis thrive in warm, slightly acidic to neutral water conditions, ideally between 75-82°F (24-28°C), and prefer densely planted aquariums with plenty of hiding spots. They are generally peaceful and do well in community tanks, although males can exhibit territorial behavior during mating.
As omnivores, Sparkling Gouramis benefit from a varied diet that includes high-quality flakes, small pellets, and occasional live or frozen foods like daphnia and brine shrimp. With proper care, they can live up to 4-5 years, making them a delightful and engaging addition to any freshwater aquarium.
