Mbu Puffer
The Mbu Puffer (Tetraodon mbu) is a fascinating and large freshwater fish known for its unique, rounded body and the ability to puff up as a defense mechanism. Native to the Congo River Basin in Central Africa, this species is characterized by its striking coloration, typically featuring a mix of green, yellow, and brown hues with distinctive patterns.
Mbu Puffers are popular among aquarium enthusiasts for their personality and intelligence, but they require a spacious tank (at least 100 gallons) due to their potential size, which can reach up to 12 inches (30 cm). They thrive in well-filtered, warm water, ideally between 75-80°F (24-27°C), and appreciate plenty of hiding spots and space to swim.
As carnivores, Mbu Puffers have a diet primarily consisting of live or frozen foods, such as shrimp, snails, and other meaty treats. Their unique shape and behavior make them a captivating addition to a species-specific tank or a carefully planned community setup with compatible tank mates. With proper care, Mbu Puffers can live up to 10 years, providing both beauty and intrigue in the aquarium.
