Licorice Pygmy Gourami
The Licorice Gourami (Trichopsis pumila) is a small and captivating freshwater fish known for its unique appearance and delightful behavior. Native to the shallow waters and rice paddies of Southeast Asia, particularly in Thailand and Cambodia, this species typically grows to about 1.5 to 2 inches (3.8 to 5 cm) in length.
Licorice Gouramis are characterized by their slender bodies adorned with a striking pattern of iridescent blue and green hues, often featuring delicate vertical stripes. Males are particularly vibrant during breeding, showcasing more intense coloration and elongated fins, while females tend to be rounder and less colorful.
These gouramis thrive in warm, slightly acidic to neutral water conditions, ideally between 75-82°F (24-28°C), and prefer well-planted aquariums with plenty of hiding spots and open swimming space. They are peaceful and social fish, making them ideal for community tanks.
As omnivores, Licorice Gouramis benefit from a varied diet that includes high-quality flakes, small pellets, and occasional live or frozen foods like brine shrimp and daphnia. With proper care, they can live for 4-5 years, providing a charming and engaging presence in any freshwater aquarium.
