Leopard Danio
The leopard danio, Danio rerio var. frankei, is a striking and active freshwater fish that originates from the streams and rivers of South Asia, particularly in India and Bangladesh. This small fish, typically growing to about 1.5 to 2 inches in length, is well-loved for its unique appearance: a slender, streamlined body covered in a pattern of dark spots resembling a leopard’s coat against a shimmering silver or golden background.
Leopard danios are highly social and energetic, best kept in schools of at least five individuals, as they thrive on interaction with their own kind. They are known for their constant swimming and playful behavior, often seen darting around all levels of the aquarium. These danios are quite hardy and adaptable, making them suitable for a variety of tank setups, though they prefer a well-maintained environment with clean, well-oxygenated water. They thrive in water temperatures between 64-74°F and a pH range of 6.5-7.5.
As omnivores, leopard danios have a varied diet that includes high-quality flakes, pellets, and live or frozen foods like daphnia and brine shrimp. Their lively nature, easy-care requirements, and beautiful spotted pattern make leopard danios a popular choice among aquarists, adding vibrant movement and color to community tanks.
