Garra rufa, commonly known as the doctor fish or nibble fish, is a freshwater species native to the warm waters of the Middle East, particularly in Turkey, Syria, and parts of Iraq. These small fish typically grow to about 4-6 inches in length and are best known for their distinctive appearance, featuring a streamlined body with a slightly flattened head and a grayish-brown coloration adorned with lighter spots.

Garra rufa are particularly famous for their unique feeding behavior: they are known to nibble on the dead skin of larger animals, including humans. This natural exfoliation process has led to their popularity in spa treatments, where they are used in fish pedicures to help remove dead skin and improve skin health.

In aquariums, Garra rufa are peaceful and social fish, often best kept in groups to display their natural behavior. They thrive in well-planted tanks with plenty of hiding spots and require clean, well-oxygenated water with temperatures ranging from 72-78°F and a pH between 6.5-8.0. Their diet should consist of high-quality pellets, flakes, and fresh vegetables, as they are primarily herbivorous.

Due to their intriguing behavior and gentle nature, Garra rufa make an interesting and engaging addition to community aquariums, providing both visual appeal and the unique experience of observing their nibbling habits.
