Fahaka Puffer
The Fahaka Puffer (Tetraodon fahaka), also known as the Nile Puffer or Freshwater Puffer, is a striking and large freshwater fish known for its distinctive appearance and unique personality. Native to the rivers and lakes of Africa, particularly the Nile River Basin, this puffer can grow up to 12 inches (30 cm) in length, making it one of the larger species in the pufferfish family.
Fahaka Puffers are characterized by their rounded bodies, large eyes, and vibrant coloration, which can range from greenish-brown to yellow, often featuring darker patterns or spots. They are well-known for their curious and interactive behavior, making them popular among aquarium enthusiasts.
These puffers require a spacious tank (at least 100 gallons) with plenty of hiding spots and open swimming areas, as they are active swimmers. They thrive in warm, slightly brackish water conditions, typically between 75-82°F (24-28°C).
Fahaka Puffers are carnivorous and require a varied diet that includes live or frozen foods such as shrimp, snails, and fish. With proper care, they can live up to 10 years, providing an engaging and dynamic presence in a well-maintained aquarium. However, due to their territorial nature and potential for aggression, they are best kept in species-specific tanks or with carefully chosen tank mates.
