Colombian Zebra Pleco
The Colombian Zebra Pleco (Hypancistrus debilittera) is a stunning freshwater fish known for its bold black and white striped pattern, resembling a zebra. Native to the fast-flowing rivers of Colombia, this pleco species typically grows to about 3 to 5 inches (7.5 to 12.5 cm) in length, making it suitable for smaller aquariums.
Colombian Zebra Plecos are characterized by their striking contrast of black and white vertical stripes that cover their entire body and fins, giving them a unique and eye-catching appearance. They are peaceful and generally shy, preferring to stay hidden during the day.
These plecos thrive in warm, well-oxygenated water, ideally between 75-82°F (24-28°C), and prefer tanks with plenty of hiding places like caves, rocks, and driftwood. Though not heavy algae eaters like some pleco species, they are omnivorous and enjoy a diet that includes sinking pellets, protein-rich foods like bloodworms, and vegetable matter.
With proper care, Colombian Zebra Plecos can live for up to 10 years, making them a beautiful and exotic addition to freshwater aquariums.
